Mulled Wine

Mulled Wine

A great recipe which can be made in advance with the Mulled orange syrup. This syrup can also be reduced and concentrated by boiling then straining and serving poured into individual glasses and topped with boiling water and a dash of red wine. Alternatively this can be reheated with the addition of red wine or cranberry juice, for a non-alcoholic version.

Ingredients

  • 1.7 L 3 pints water
  • 225 g/8oz granulated sugar
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 oranges
  • 10-12 cloves
  • 2 bottles red wine
  • 1 apple and orange to serve

Instructions

  • Roughly cut up the oranges and place in a sauce pan with all the other ingredients, except for the red wine. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to the boil, simmer for 30 minutes, and strain. (The syrup can be made up to this stage and then stored in the fridge until required or as suggested above reduced and concentrated.)
  • To serve, return the syrup to the pan, bring to boiling point, add the wine and slice of apple and orange and serve or pour a little syrup into individual glasses, top with boiling water a little red wine and serve with mulled or roasted apples, oranges & lemon.
